These first trims are not perfect (nor are they finished), but they sure are a blessing for these animals. Many of these burros spend months in holding facilities, standing around on soft footing. Their hooves quickly become long, overgrown, and in rough condition. Many people ask, "why do you need to trim wild burros?" The answer is this: in the wild, these animals are walking 15-20 miles a day over rough and varied terrain, which wears the hoof down naturally. When we have any equine living a domesticated life, their hooves are no longer being used the way they once were when in the wild. Donkeys, just like horses, need regular hoof trimming. The first trims for these wild burros takes a great deal of patience. This is not a quick or easy process. I do everything free standing, never snubbed or tied, and usually only trimming a little at a time in order to build their confidence & teach them that this can, and will be, a good experience. As they become more confident, trimming becomes easier (and prettier)! As a donkey trainer and hoof trimmer, creating positive experiences is most important to me. The mind of a donkey is incredible and once they learn something can be a positive experience, it truly lasts for a lifetime!
At Hope The Wild Burro Place, we genuinely care about the future of these animals. As we always say, "Everything begins with Hope"
